Dear Mr. Lake:
Thank you for contacting me regarding asbestos. Your correspondence was forwarded to me by Congressmen Boehlert out of Congressional Courtesy, as I am your Representative in Congress.
The 106th Congress carefully examined the very important subject of asbestos compensation. H.R.1283, the Fairness in Asbestos Compensatoin Act of 2000, would establish legal standards and procedures for the fair, prompt, inexpensive, and efficient resolution of personal injury claims arising out of asbestos exposure. The legislation was introduced by Congressmen Henry Hyde on March 25, 1999 and was reported out of the House Committee on the Judiciary on March 16, 2000. I will consider your recommendation on this legislation should it come to a House of Representatives floor vote during the 106th Congress. I have also enclosed a Congressional Reseach Service Report, Asbestos Compensation Act of 2000, which will provide you additional information on this legislation.
Thank you again for contacting me regarding this important issue. Please feel free to contact me in the future should you have futher comments or questions.
